Martuwarra Fitzroy River: First they came for the land

Posted on July 10, 2021

The Martuwarra Fitzroy River is one of Australia’s biggest river systems and its waters are vital to the Aboriginal people who live along it.

It embodies their creation spirit, forms the spine of songlines, and still feeds the communities that live along it. The river has borne witness to ancient song cycles, colonisation, resistance, massacres and pastoralism.

Travel with ABC Radio National along the river to hear from the traditional owners who live along it about what the river means to them and the challenges it’s facing.
