This morning, we delivered a petition signed by you and other passionate supporters across Australia, calling for protection of the critically endangered freshwater sawfish.
The petition was handed to Water Minister Simone McGurk at WA Parliament, urging the government to take action after multiple mass sawfish kills in the catchment.
In November 2023, 17 sawfish died on a drying floodplain on Liveringa Station — a pastoral lease that has a licence to pump water from a tributary of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River.
Thanks to your support, an investigation into these deaths was launched and the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation are working with Traditional Owners and Aboriginal Rangers to better manage future mass strandings and rescue efforts of freshwater sawfish along the river.
The Martuwarra is the last stronghold and last great nursery for the freshwater sawfish, which is why it's crucial we continue to work together to protect the river.
Our collective efforts – of signing petitions and spreading the word – are helping ensure that the mighty Martuwarra continues to flow freely and support remarkable wildlife, like the freshwater sawfish.
