A look back at 2025 for the Martuwarra

Posted on December 19, 2025

From award-winning film screenings, to exhibitions, events, billboards, and postcards delivered straight into the hands of decision makers, it has been an important and exciting year for the Martuwarra Fitzroy River.

Underpinning it all has been your continued support and passion to protect a river that’s unlike any other on Earth. Thank you for standing with the Martuwarra, Tim.

Here’s a recap of what we achieved together in 2025.

Thousands stood up for the Martuwarra’s critically endangered freshwater sawfish on World Sawfish Day

Over 2,000 people across Australia sent a powerful message to decision-makers that the Martuwarra’s freshwater sawfish, and their last global stronghold, must be protected for generations to come. We handed that message directly to the person responsible for the future of the Martuwarra, Water Minister Don Punch.

Award-winning film Lifeblood toured far and wide

Lifeblood – The Martuwarra Fitzroy River took home the Supreme Jury Prize and Best Director awards from the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival – a powerful moment of nation-wide recognition for this important living river.

We shared Lifeblood, and the message to protect the Martuwarra, with audiences across the country, from the east coast, to up in the Kimberley, in Perth, down south in Margaret River and online.

We sent a message for the Martuwarra that couldn't be ignored

Just last month, we launched an advertising campaign, including a billboard and bus ad, right in the heart of Perth with a simple but powerful message for our WA decision makers: Protect the Martuwarra Fitzroy River!

The WA Government is currently considering plans that could allow thirsty industries to take billions of litres from the Martuwarra, which is why we must continue to call for a healthy, free-flowing future for the Martuwarra.

The community behind the Martuwarra kept standing strong

We've had meaningful discussions with thousands of people at 18 different stalls across Perth. These conversations reminded us time and time again just how many people have a story about their connection to the Kimberley and why it must be protected.

More protection for land and sea in the Kimberley!

The Cook Government and Miriuwung Gajerrong Traditional Owners signed a landmark agreement to add 170,000 hectares of new protected areas in the East Kimberley. This supports culture, people and wildlife and creates new opportunities for the Miriuwung Gajerrong community.

We also celebrated the finalisation of the Bardi Jawi Gaara Marine Park – WA’s first co-designed marine park with Traditional Owners! This new marine park marked a huge achievement by the Bardi and Jawi Traditional Owners and will bring lasting benefits for local communities, while safeguarding habitat for many incredible marine species.

We handed over our holiday wish for the Martuwarra

To finish off a busy and exciting year, today we handed over a card signed by over one thousand of you addressed to the WA Premier and Water Minister, calling on them to protect the mighty Martuwarra this holiday season.

Next year will be another huge year for the river, and we will need your continued passion to call for a future for the Martuwarra that we can be proud to leave for the generations to come.
