Support the creation of the Buccaneer Archipelago Marine Parks

Three new marine parks in the Buccaneer Archipelago!

Send your congratulations to Bardi Jawi, Mayala and Dambeemangarddee Traditional Owners and the WA Government on Australia’s first co-designed marine parks.

Dear Premier Mark McGowan and Environment Minister Reece Whitby,

Congratulations to you and the WA Government on the creation of three new marine parks in the Buccaneer Archipelago with the Bardi Jawi, Mayala and Dambeemangarddee Traditional Owners.

As Australia’s first ever co-designed marine parks, this milestone achievement will be a legacy for the McGowan Government and will result in long-lasting environmental, social, cultural, and economic benefits for the Kimberley.

These new marine parks will protect 600,000 hectares of pristine waters over the Buccaneer Archipelago - safeguarding an oasis of marine life including whales, turtles, dugongs, fish and coral reefs

These new marine parks will add to the existing network of marine protection in the Great Kimberley Marine Park – creating more than 3.1 million hectares of protection off the Kimberley coast, making it one of Australia’s largest marine parks.

I commend the delivery of the McGowan Government election commitment to implement joint vesting and special purpose cultural zones in these marine parks. These legislative reforms provide much improved recognition of Aboriginal leadership and expertise in sea country management, and set an exciting conservation precedent.

I urge the government to maintain momentum by acting on your commitment to protect the outer Buccaneer Archipelago including Adele Island, Beagle Reef and Mavis Reef.

Once again, I congratulate you and Bardi Jawi, Mayala and Dambeemangarddee Traditional Owners on this historic achievement of the creation of the three Buccaneer Archipelago marine parks.

    Yours sincerely,
