Send a message to your new Member of Parliament and urge them to protect the Martuwarra Fitzroy River.

We'll send the message below to your local MLA

    To my local MP,

Congratulations on your recent success at the WA Election.

I am writing to you as your local constitutent about a place that is very important to me – the Kimberley’s Martuwarra Fitzroy River.

The National Heritage listed Martuwarra Fitzroy River is of outstanding environmental and cultural value.

It is renowned across Australia for its fishing and tourism, and is a haven for rare species, like the critically endangered freshwater sawfish.

In 2017, the incoming Labor Government made an election commitment to protect the Martuwarra Fitzroy River. Since then, we have seen significant progress, but there is still more to be done to ensure the river is protected.

In 2021, 43,000 people, like me, sent a submission to the government, calling for all plans for large-scale water extraction to be abandoned and for long-term protection of the Martuwarra to be enacted.

Following this record-breaking public response and strong support from Traditional Owners, the government made a policy promise in 2023 to protect the Martuwarra’s surface water flows. Now this commitment must be made binding.

Developments that threaten to take huge amounts of water from the river, its floodplains or ancient water systems, threaten the health of the river, wildlife and community, and risk a Murray-Darling disaster.

I strongly urge you as my local MP to support long-term, binding protection of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River that is co-designed with Traditional Owners.

Water is life and we must protect it!

    Yours sincerely,

Big decisions will soon be made about the future of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River and the ancient interconnected water systems that support it.

Following the WA Election, it's crucial that all members hear from you how important the Martuwarra Fitzroy River is and why it must be protected.

Until long-term, co-designed protection is enacted for the river, it's floodplains, wetlands and tributaries – the future of the river remains uncertain.

    Why you should take action:

    • In 2023, the WA Government made a policy commitment to protect the surface water flows of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River, now these promises must be made binding.

    • Proposals to pump huge amounts of water from the Martuwarra Fitzroy River threaten to destroy this healthy, free-flowing river system and create another Murray-Darling disaster.

    • The Martuwarra Fitzroy River and its catchment supports the livelihoods of local people, culture, tourism, fishing, and rare wildlife such as the critically endangered freshwater sawfish all of which would be significantly impacted by large-scale irrigation development.

    • Traditional Owners have been working for decades to have their rights, culture and the Martuwarra Fitzroy River protected.
    • This is our chance to protect the National Heritage listed Martuwarra Fitzroy River for good and create long-term binding protection.
