Warlibirri National Park announcement

Historic achievement by Gooniyandi Traditional Owners and one step closer to the completion of the Fitzroy River National Park. Send a message of congratulations today!

Dear Premier Cook and Minister Whitby,

Congratulations to you and the WA Government on partnering with Gooniyandi Traditional Owners to create the Warlibirri National Park. This national park is a major milestone in the delivery of your historic 2017 election commitment to create the Fitzroy River National Park.

The Warlibirri National Park will cover the Martuwarra Fitzroy River after it forks west at Fitzroy Crossing to flow along the Margaret River, out to the ancient Margaret Gorge and Mueller Ranges.

You have my strong support for this conservation achievement as the national park will provide a protection mechanism for a portion of the National Heritage Listed Martuwarra Fitzroy River. Furthermore, the Warlibirri National Park will support the local Gooniyandi community by boosting tourism, protecting cultural heritage, and providing sustainable conservation and land management jobs.

I look forward to welcoming the implementation of the other portions of the Fitzroy River National Park, jointly managed by Bunuba and Kija Traditional Owners. I encourage you to support other Martuwarra Fitzroy River Traditional Owner groups who aspire to establish national parks on their Country. This will further support Aboriginal economic development, as well as cultural and environmental management opportunities in the Fitzroy Valley.

Once again, I congratulate the McGowan Government for the creation of the Warlibirri National Park and for advancing sustainable economic development through joint management with Gooniyandi Traditional Owners.

    Yours sincerely,

BREAKING: Gooniyandi Traditional Owners have signed a historic agreement with the WA Government to create the Warlibirri National Park on Gooniyandi Country in the Fitzroy Valley!

The Warlibirri National Park will protect the Margaret River and parts of the Fitzroy River near Fitzroy Crossing where the Margaret River flows out to the ancient Margaret Gorge and Mueller Ranges.

This historic achievement by Gooniyandi Traditional Owners will protect the Margaret Gorge from dams and irrigation proposals, which have threatened the Margaret River – a major tributary of the Martuwarra Fitzroy River - for more than 25 years.

This new national park will safeguard unique landscapes, endangered species, and Aboriginal culture and heritage, while creating sustainable local jobs, like Aboriginal ranger positions and Indigenous tourism.

This announcement is a milestone in the delivery of the McGowan Government's 2017 election commitment to create the Fitzroy River National Park.

Today we congratulate Gooniyandi Traditional Owners for working with the WA Government to create this new national park! Help celebrate this win by sending a message of support to the Premier and Environment Minister.
