Protect the Fitzroy River!

Protect the Fitzroy River!

New irrigation proposals threaten the health and flow of the Fitzroy River, the lifeblood of the Kimberley. The Government made an election commitment to protect the Fitzroy River - send a message to your local MP asking them to support protection for the Fitzroy.

Dear [your local MP’s name will be automatically entered],

    Yours faithfully,

    • Significant progress has been made over the last few years in protecting the Kimberley coast with the Great Kimberley Marine Park.
    • The Government made an election commitment to protect the Fitzroy River through creating the new Fitzroy River National Park and management plan, as well as not allowing the River or its tributaries to be dammed.
    • The mighty Fitzroy River is the lifeblood of the Kimberley, stretching over 700km from the East Kimberley to reach the coast at King Sound.
    • A recent irrigation proposal at Gogo Station plans to take 50 billion litres of water from the Margaret River, a major tributary of the Fitzroy. In one out of two years 50 billion litres would remove all the water in the Margaret River; and in low rainfall years more than a third of the flow in the Fitzroy.
    • Proposed irrigation and damming projects could do irreversible damage to the river, which is National Heritage-listed and supports endangered species like the Freshwater Sawfish.
    • Continued support for the protection of the Fitzroy River from local MPs is important.
